Meaning
“上から目線” (Ue kara mesen) means looking down on someone or talking down to someone. It refers to an attitude or behavior where someone treats another person as inferior or speaks to them in a condescending manner.
More specifically, it describes:
A patronizing or arrogant attitude — when someone acts superior and treats others with disrespect, as if they’re looking down at them from a higher position (literally “from above”).
Condescending speech or behavior — communicating with someone in a way that implies you think you’re better than them, smarter than them, or more important than them.
Examples of situations: A boss might use “上から目線” when speaking harshly to employees, or someone might do it when giving unsolicited advice in a self-righteous way, or when someone acts superior about their knowledge or status.
The phrase literally combines “上” ue/above) and “目線” (me-sen/line of sight), so the image is of someone literally looking down their nose at another person. It’s generally used to criticize this kind of arrogant or disrespectful behavior.
In casual English, you might say someone has a “holier-than-thou” attitude or is being “full of themselves” to convey a similar meaning.
