Meaning
“行き当たりばったり” means doing things without a plan or preparation, acting in an improvised or haphazard manner. It describes approaching situations spontaneously as they come up, rather than thinking ahead.
In English, this can be expressed as:
- “ad hoc” – making decisions as situations arise
- “impromptu” – done without planning
- “haphazard” – lacking organization or order
- “hit-or-miss” – random and unreliable
- “winging it” (informal) – doing something without preparation
For example:
- “We traveled through Europe in an ad hoc manner, deciding each day where to go next.”
- “His approach to the project was too haphazard to be effective.”
The phrase literally means “going and hitting, going and hitting” (行き当たり = going and hitting upon something), conveying the image of stumbling from one thing to another without direction.
